What are Medi-Cal Administrative Activities (MAA)?
Medi-Cal Administrative Activities (MAA) provides federal reimbursement for the cost of performing administrative activities that support efforts to identify and enroll potentially eligible individuals into Medi-Cal and to promote and assist with access to Medi-Cal covered services.
Where is MAA Applied?
There are four types of MAA in California:
County-Based MAA (C-MAA)
Mental Health MAA (MH-MAA)
School-Based MAA (SB-MAA)
Tribal MAA (T-MAA)
The MAA program is administered by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and each type of MAA has its own set of policies and procedures for its implementation. Programs performing MAA are reimbursed a portion of the certified public expenditures expended by the governmental agencies.
Why Participate?
- It is an opportunity for your county, its programs, and its community-based organizations to receive partial reimbursement for activities they are already doing.
- MAA reimbursements are unrestricted. There is no cap on reimbursement.
- MAA assures more members of your community are enrolled in Medi-Cal and are accessing Medi-Cal covered services improving the health of your community.
- MAA improves the delivery of Medi-Cal covered services for Medi-Cal beneficiaries in your community.
Examples of MAA:
- Outreach about Medi-Cal as a health insurance option
- Assisting people complete a Medi-Cal application
- Referring, monitoring and coordinating eligible people to a Medi-Cal covered service (E.g. doctor, dentist, mental health provider, substance abuse treatment)
- Organizing transportation for a client to a Medi-Cal covered service
- Program planning to improve access to and quality of Medi-Cal covered services
- Strategizing to improve and increase the health services systems serving Medi-Cal clients
- Policy development of Medi-Cal covered services
- Collecting, analyzing and reporting health care statistical data which is used to improve health systems used by Medi-Cal clients
MAA Participants

participate in MAA:

Why is Reliable Time Tracking So Important?
- Both MAA and TCM require that participants perpetually time survey for all their paid time.
- Efficient time tracking has proven overwhelming for many who continue to utilize a paper-based orinconsistent approach.
- Programs that have implemented an electronic method for tracking time – such as Persimmony Time Study – have a greater likelihood of reimbursement success.
“Persimmony Time Study is very user friendly for our staff and supervisors. It provides clarity, efficiency and a centralized location from where all the data we need can be found at a click.”
